First of all, you should make sure that you have a nice program to listen to these files. Even though the Windows Media Player is quite willing to do so, one shouldn't really have to use it, especially if you intend to listen to more than one file. Or if you want to have them as background music for Windows, then I can tell you: search no more, because there is one program that does it all (except making coffee . . . ): MidiPlus by Haris I. Volos. This program is Freeware, so you will get your money's worth, and much more than that.
To make these actually worth to listen to, you'll probably need a Wavetable sound card. Most of them are optimized for General Midi and should sound good on any GM compatible sound card. My sound card is a Sound Blaster 16 (the original!) with a Yamaha DB-50XG daughterboard that provides the wavetable sound. I have found this combination to work great for both old and new games. The only problem occurs when I try to play midi files that are optimized for the Sound Blaster AWE32/64. From those I usually don't even hear so much as a beep, because they switch the bank number, which apparently confuses my Yamaha card.
Oh, and by the way: if you have any files that you think I should offer on this site, don't hesitate to tell me. But please ask first before sending them attached or encoded, because my site administrator tends to get mad at these huge mails.
Some people have been asking me why I still use midi files, when there are music formats that are way cooler, like MP3 for example. The reason is simple: size. My current collection contains about 1000 songs, and uses up little more than 10 MB of disk space. Try that with MP3! You'd probably have to buy a few hard disks extra...
Ok, and now for something completely different: The M Files.
I have a few sections to choose from:
| Filename | Size | Description/Game and Company name |
| List.txt | 12 KB | file list for all the files in the various zip files |
| Various.zip | 40 KB | holds the files for a few games for which I either don't have all the music files or they don't have more than one piece |
| BI2.zip | 4 KB | Battle Isle II by Blue Byte. This is quite broken at the moment and only contains one song |
| Descent.zip | 91 KB | Descent by Interplay |
| Dott.zip | 305 KB | Day of the Tentacle by Lucasarts |
| DF.zip | 600 KB | Dark Forces by Lucasarts. Some people claim that these aren't GM compatible, but I haven't been able to resolve that yet. |
| DFall.zip | 469 KB | All songs from Daggerfall by Bethesda Softworks |
| Duke3D.zip | 186 KB | Duke Nukem 3D by Apogee/3D Realms |
| HOF.zip | 54 KB | Legend of Kyrandia II - The Hand of Fate by Westwood Studios |
| Kyrandia.zip | 60 KB | Legend of Kyrandia I by Westwood Studios |
| Sierra.zip | 208 KB | A few Sierra games |
| Settler2.zip | 60 KB | The Settlers II by Blue Byte |
| Tie.zip | 155 KB | Tie Fighter by Lucasarts |
| WC.zip | 129 KB | Wing Commander by Origin |
Disk space considerations (aka "quota exceeded") have
led me to the decision not to include the music to the Ultima series in
this site. However, there is an excellent site if you are interested, namely
Telavar Dragon's Mysterious Sosaria
where you will find the music for each and every one of the Ultima games,
including the Ultima Underworlds and the Worlds of Ultima.
There is only one problem with these files, and that
is that they are optimized for the AWE32/64. The files I actually use are
slightly modified in that I removed the bank change code to make them work
with my sound card. If you are interested in getting those modified versions,
please feel free to ask.
